The Son You Love

July 21, 2024

Most people have had the unfortunate experience of feeling “used.” Someone wanted something from you but had little or no regard for you after they got what they wanted. You were merely a means to an end. It’s a terrible feeling, yet that is how many of us treat God. We seek Him in our need, but after receiving the gift, we forget the Giver. Join us for part 6 of The Pursuit of God, where we will learn that we will never be satisfied with the promises of God until we are satisfied with the God of the promise.

Small Group Questions

Use this outline for personal reflection, as a couples or family devotion, or with a small group.

HANGOUT

We are continuing our study of Abraham and his nephew Lot. What has happened in our story so far?

HEAR

Read Genesis 19:1-11

  • Where had the angels been before coming to Sodom? (Gen. 18) Why did Lot insist they stay with him rather than spend the night in the town square?
  • What shocking offer did Lot make to the men of the town? What does this suggest about Lot? How did the men respond to Lot’s objection?
  • Read Ephesians 4:18-19. How do these verses relate to the people of Sodom? What warning do they have for us today?

Read Genesis 19:12-29

  • How do Lot’s sons-in-law respond to his warning? What does this say about them? Have you ever ignored someone’s warning only to regret it later?
  • What did Lot request of the angels in verse 20, and why?
  • What is the evidence of God remembering Abraham in verse 29? How important was Abraham’s intercession for Lot?
  • Like Abraham, are you currently negotiating with God on behalf of someone far from the Lord?

Read Genesis 19:30-38

  • Lot pitched his tent near Sodom (Gen. 13:10-13) and then asked to flee to Zoar (Gen. 19:18-22). What consequences did these decisions have for Lot’s family?
  • Have you suffered any consequences because of where your father pitched his tent? What consequences will your children face because of where you’ve pitched your tent?

HUDDLE

What is your current proximity to sin? Are you so immersed in culture that you cannot see the spiritual consequences for you and your family? Talk about it, invite accountability, and take time to pray together.

Think Deeper

  1. What is the difference between a gift and a giver? What happens when we confuse the two?
  2. Are there any gifts of God that you value more than God Himself?
  3. What or who is your “Isaac,” and how is God inviting you to lay your “Isaac” down?
