How Do We Know

How do we know what we know? This may seem like a simple question, but it is one with which philosophers and theologians have wrestled for centuries. It is even more complicated when we talk about things like faith and spirituality. John wanted to assure his readers that what they believed about Jesus was true. As one of the last living witnesses of Jesus’ resurrection, he was uniquely qualified to offer that assurance. Join us for part 1 of Love Letters as we take a look at chapter 1 of First John to meet the messenger, hear the message, and learn why it matters.

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.

Using the steps below, practice lectio divina this week, focusing on one chapter each day from 1, 2, and 3 John.

Step 1: Read. Read the chapter in its entirety.

Step 2: Reflect. Take a few minutes to think about what you read.

Step 3: Respond. Grab a pen and write down any thoughts or questions you have.

Step 4: Rest. Clear your mind and allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you through His word.
