Your Soul Needs a Foundation

1/28/2024

Sinkholes cost Floridians an average of $300,000,000 every year. This threat goes largely unseen until it is too late. Likewise, our souls might be in danger of suddenly collapsing if they are not centered on the proper foundation. Join us for part 4 of The Care and Feeding of the Human Soul, where we will learn to recognize the dangers of a soul not centered on Jesus Christ.

Small Group Questions

Use this outline for personal reflection, as a couple or family devotion, or with a small group.

HANGOUT

We have been talking about the care and feeding of the soul for the past several weeks. What has stood out to you? Have you been more aware of the condition of your soul? What have you done to be more intentional about caring for and feeding your soul?

HEAR

Read 1 Corinthians 3:1-9

  • What did Paul mean when he said he “could not address [the Corinthian church] as spiritual people? What was the evidence of their immaturity? What does this suggest about the condition of their souls?
  • Based on this passage, what is necessary for a church to be spiritually mature? Does this describe our church? Does it describe you? Why or why not?

Read 1 Corinthians 3:10-15

  • How does Paul address the division of loyalties among the Corinthians? What was Paul’s role as their leader? What does he say is the foundation of the church?
  • How is the building tested? What should this teach us about pain and suffering? What has pain and suffering revealed about the foundation of your soul and the building materials of your faith?

Read 1 Corinthians 3:16-17

  • What does Paul proclaim to be God’s temple? Is that “you” singular or plural (“y’all”)? What difference does it make?
  • Not only is the church described as the temple, but so are individual believers (read 1 Corinthians 6:19-20). How does the well-being of your soul affect your family and our church?

HUDDLE

Three things adversely affect your soul. They are sin, worry, and hurry. Which of these is currently your greatest temptation? What will you do this week to care for your soul? Talk about it, invite accountability, and take time to pray together.

Daily Reading

As you read, invite the Holy Spirit to reveal any way your life is not firmly centered on Jesus. Ask for God’s forgiveness and help to recenter your life around Him.

  • Day 1: Psalm 1
  • Day 2: Psalm 18
  • Day 3: Psalm 127
  • Day 4: Matthew 7

Think Deeper

  1. How often do you reflect on your thoughts, words, and actions at the end of the day?
  2. Are you frequently impatient or restless? What does this say about your soul?
  3. How vulnerable is your soul to circumstances or the actions of other people?
