Jesus changed Simon’s name to Peter based on his declaration about Jesus’ true identity. In doing so, Jesus not only revealed Peter’s true identity but the identity of every person who would become a part of the Jesus movement. The Church is not a building, but a body; not a meeting, but a movement, not an organization, but an organism. Join us for week 3 of What’s in a Name as we consider what it means to be the church.

Jesus' Identity:

Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the Living God

Peter's Identity:

Peter’s identity was transformed when he proclaimed faith in Jesus as Savior and Lord.

The Church's Identity:

The Church, or the “Ekklesia”, is “the Called-out Ones”

The Bible tells the story of how God is moving out of inanimate structures and into the hearts of a people fully yielded to Him.

The church is a body, not a building. Therefore, we must prioritize people over property.

The church is an organism, not an organization. Therefore, it must prioritize relationships over rules.

The church is a movement, not a meeting. Therefore, we cannot become complacent but must follow the Holy Spirit.

This week we continue reading through the book of Isaiah. As you read, pay attention to the names . . . names of God, names used to describe God’s people, names given to Isaiah’s children, and names that will be used for Jesus.
