When the City Comes to You
9/29/2019
Jesus said to “pray to the Lord of the harvest to send workers to the field” – the “field” was the mass of humanity – the city – that was coming toward Him. Later, Jesus wept as He overlooked the city of Jerusalem, before issuing His final directive to His disciples to be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Join Sunday as Pastor Gary shares three major changes we must make if we are going to be a church that is For the City.
The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.” Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”
John 4:19-43
Principles(KNOW)
Three important shifts we need to make as God brings the city to us:
- From Preference to Purpose (John 4:19-26)
- From Competition to Cooperation (John 4:27-28)
- From Decision to Discipleship (John 4:39-43)
Practices (DO)
- Attend a Cottage Prayer Meetings on November 5
- Prayerfully evaluate your own heart:
- Am I more committed to my preferences than to God’s purpose?
- Are there groups of people I refuse to reach, serve, or with whom I will not partner?
- Have I followed up my “decision” for Jesus with an intentional effort to be His disciple?
- Who am I discipling?
- Pray and ask God to open your eyes to the fields that are ripe unto harvest.
