Jesus’ death on the cross is a demonstration of God’s love, but it wouldn’t have been necessary were not for the sin and brokenness in our hearts. Just as the Lord’s Supper is an invitation to look and remember God’s love, it is also a mirror that allows to evaluate the condition of our souls and recognize our need for a Savior. We will begin our worship service with a time of silent reflection as we prepare our hearts to share the Lord’s Supper.

Examine your motives, test your heart, come to this meal in holy awe.

1 Corinthians 11:28 (MSG)

We look within …

and search for any division (1 Corinthians 11:17-19)
and search for any hypocrisy (1 Corinthians 11:20)
and search for any selfishness (1 Corinthians 11:20-22)
and see our need for a Savior (1 Corinthians 11:23-26)

What does it mean to take the Lord’s Supper in an “unworthy manner”?

What it doesn’t mean:

What it does mean:

As you prepare to take the bread and dip it in this cup…

  1. Are there relationships in your life with other believers that need to be mended? Are you harboring some bitterness or an unforgiving spirit for someone?
  2. Are you taking the Lord’s supper to check a religious box? Why are you really here today?
  3. In what ways have your actions this week been inconsistent with the Gospel?
  4. In what ways are you unwilling to surrender yourself to God, to others?
  5. How much of what you do is motivated by selfishness?
  6. Do you have any unconfessed sin in your life?
  7. Do you recognize your need for a Savior and Christ’s sufficiency to save you?
