The Great Gambit

1/22/2023

As Jesus made His way to Jerusalem, He told an unusual story about a man who journeyed to receive for himself a kingdom. While he was away, he left his servants in charge of his affairs. But the man’s servants didn’t want their master as king, so some of the servants were not good stewards of their master’s resources. Join us for part two of Tipping Point, where we will see how our use of time and treasure reflects the king we’ve chosen to serve.

HANGOUT

Does God allow us to be tempted? If so, why? Does God Himself tempt us? Why or why not?

HEAR

Read Luke 4:1-13

  • Who led Jesus into the wilderness? Why is the desert a place where we experience temptation?
  • How did Satan tempt Jesus, and how did Jesus respond?
  • Which of the three temptations faced by Jesus is most tempting to you?

Read Luke 4:14-30

  • What made Jesus’ appearance in the synagogue controversial? How did people respond?
  • What about Jesus’ words in verses 25-27 caused people to want to kill Him?

Read Luke 4:38-44

  • Chapter four begins with Satan tempting Jesus to make a name for Himself and ends with Jesus quietly healing people. How does this contrast capture the character and mission of Jesus? What lessons should His followers learn from that example?
  • Why does Jesus rebuke the demons when they declare Him to be the Son of God?
  • What does Jesus do the morning after He healed the crowds who had been brought to Him the evening before? What lesson should we take from this example?

HUDDLE

In what situation or circumstance are you most susceptible to temptation? Do you make any special efforts to avoid those situations or prepare for the temptations they may bring? Talk about it, invite accountability, and take time to pray together.

Think Deeper

  1. What will happen to all your stuff when you die?
  2. If a stranger only had your calendar and bank statement, how would they describe you and your priorities?
  3. If you knew you only had 24 hours to live, what would you do with your time and money?
