Splinters and Knot Holes

11/27/2022

The family Christmas tree is a staple in most homes. And just like the families who set them up, Christmas trees come in all shapes, styles, and sizes. Some are fancy and color-coordinated, while others are filled with a hodgepodge of homemade ornaments. Jesus, though He was God, was nonetheless born into a family. And like any other family, Jesus’ family faced many of the same problems all families face. Join us each Sunday this Advent as we consider The Family Christmas Tree of Jesus.

Small Group Questions

Use this outline for personal reflection, as a couples or family devotion, or with a small group.

HANGOUT

What is your favorite thing about the holidays? What is your least favorite thing?

Describe your “perfect” Christmas.

HEAR

Read Luke 1:5-25

  • What was Zachariah’s response to the news that his wife Elizabeth would bear him a son? Was this a rational response? Why or why not?
  • What was the consequence of Zechariah’s lack of faith? Why do you think this happened?
  • Read Psalm 46:10. Why is silence an essential spiritual discipline? Are silence and solitude a part of your relationship with God? If so, how? If not, why not?

Read Luke 1:26-38

  • From the human perspective, what was wrong with the timing of the two pregnancies described in Luke 1? (1:6-7 & 34)
  • The coming of the Messiah was a much-anticipated event. What made it such troubling news for Mary?
  • Have you ever been conflicted over something God was doing because of how it might impact you?
  • Have you ever been disappointed in God’s timing in your own life?
  • Read Galatians 4:4. What does it mean that Jesus came in the “fullness of time”? What did that mean for Mary?
  • Have you had a “fullness of time” moment with Jesus?

HUDDLE

What practical steps will you take this Advent to keep yourself and those you love focused on Jesus? Talk about it, invite accountability, and take time to pray together.

Daily Readings

This week’s Scripture readings explore some of the people in Jesus’ family tree. As you read these stories, invite the Holy Spirit to speak to you about your own family.

  • Day 1: Matthew 1:1-17 & Luke 3:23-28
  • Day 2: Genesis 38
  • Day 3: Joshua 2
  • Day 4: Ruth 1
  • Day 5: Ruth 2
  • Day 6: Ruth 3-4
  • Day 7: 2 Samuel 11

Think Deeper

  1. Are there “splinters” in your family tree that still cause pain?
  2. Why is it important to know that Jesus’ family wasn’t perfect?
  3. How has (or might) Jesus heal your family this Christmas?
