Family Rhythms

May 10, 2026

Our daily habits shape who we become — not only as individuals, but as families. The traditions and routines of a family can shape our children and future generations for years to come. The routines we practice — whether it’s watching college football every Saturday or sharing meals around the dinner table — often become the patterns our children naturally adopt. That’s why God gave Israel such intentional instruction in Deuteronomy 6 — to ensure that daily family rhythms would continually reinforce faith and identity. Join us for Part Five of Home Work, as we explore how the sacred rhythms we build into our homes today can shape a lasting legacy of faith.

Small Group Questions

Use this outline for personal reflection, as a couple, or with your family or small group.

HANGOUT

What is the busiest part of your family’s daily routine? What makes it hard to invite God into that moment?

Hear

Our Heart | Read Deuteronomy 6:4-9

  • Before we are encouraged to teach our children, we are told that these words are to be on our hearts. Why is it necessary for parents to love God deeply before they can teach their children effectively?
  • How would you assess your heart’s condition right now?

Morning Rhythms | Read Psalm 5:3, Psalm 59:16, Lamentation 3:22,23

  • How does the morning rush or routine affect your spiritual tone for the day?
  • How can you incorporate new rhythms into your morning routine that allow time to speak with the Lord, proclaim his goodness, and revel in his faithfulness?
  • Why is it important to establish this within your family?

Daytime/Afternoon Rhythms | Read Colossians 3:16-17

  • How does this passage guide you as you approach your daily routines?
  • What rhythm can you add to your day to outwardly give thanks to God for the [mundane, monotonous, overlooked] things you might otherwise take for granted?

Evening/Bedtime Rhythms | Read Psalm 4:8, Matthew 11:28, Philippians 4:4-9

  • Where do you find peace? How can you use an evening or bedtime routine to cultivate a peaceful spirit in yourself and your family?
  • How can your evening rhythms focus your mind on the things mentioned in Philippians 4:8?

Hear

Review the Family Rhythms worksheet together, then discuss what you will do this week to be more intentional at home. Talk about it, encourage one another, and pray together.

Think Deeper

  1. What routines have most shaped your life? (ex, exercise, eating, sleeping, reading, etc.)
  2. What is your current morning routine? How can you include God in that rhythm?
  3. What is your current evening routine? How can you include God in that rhythm?
