Disciples Live in Community
January 22, 2018
When the church was born, the first disciples didn't have copies of the Bible (the New Testament didn't even exist yet!) They didn't have buildings or programs, in fact, they had almost nothing that we would consider indispensable today. So how did they go from being a handful of ragtag fishermen to leaders of a global movement? The answer is through the Power of the Holy Spirit and a deep commitment to their community of believers. Join us for part two of The Disciple’s Journey and learn how disciples then and now still grow in community.
Quoting Scripture
Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" And Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.
And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
Acts 2:37-47
Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution.
And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, "It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word."
These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands on them. And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.
Five Habits of a Disciple
Habit 1: Disciples Wait on God.
Habit 2: Disciples Grow in Community
Three things disciples share in community:
- The Gospel (2:14-41)
- Resources (2:42-47)
- Problems (6:1-7)
